MY 5-STEP APPRAISER CLIENT WORKING ARRANGEMENT
Jon Taner consults with individuals, corporate liaisons, and public and private collectors.

A brief telephone conversation will determine the scope of the client’s needs and arranges a meeting on the client’s premises.

At the meeting, an examination will be done, photographs will be taken, and provenance documentation will be noted.
03.
After the meeting, a professional opinion of value (POV) will be developed to determine if a full appraisal report is warranted.
04.
When agreed upon and the purpose of the appraisal is identified, a thorough report will be prepared utilizing professional expertise and resources.
05.
Completed reports are provided to the client with a confidential copy maintained by Jon Taner.
THE PURPOSE OF AN ART APPRAISAL
Clients seek an appraisal for various purposes including:
- Insurance policy of household valuables in case of fire or theft
- Sale or donation of fine art
- Estate planning
- Divorce/equitable distribution
- Curiosity
CONTENTS OF AN APPRAISAL REPORT
The appraisal report serves as a legal document and adheres to Internal Revenue Services Standards and those set by the Appraisal Foundation’s Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
- The report will state the purpose of the appraisal and history of ownership (provenance).
- The monetary value conclusions and prescribed methods of research will be documented.
- The objects appraised will be described in detail regarding their present condition.
- The effective date of value and location of inspection will be included.
- Photographs taken of the art by the appraiser will be enclosed.
- Recommendations will be made for preserving the art if needed.
- Biographical information about the artists will be included when available.
- A bibliography of the sources used will be listed.
- A glossary will define terms used in the report.
- A disclaimer and limiting conditions sections will be provided.

Jon Taner received his Masters of Fine Arts Degree in 1978 from Syracuse University. In 2007 and since, Jon has achieved and maintains his Uniform Standards for Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) certification.
He participates in Appraisers Association of America courses and subscribes to various sources to stay abreast of local, national, and international fine art.
